Hawaiian Electric has recently contributed a total of $35,000 to support the following Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning and enrichment program for students:
- Hawaii Society of Professional Engineers Educational Foundation for the Oʻahu Chapter MATHCOUNTS competition on Saturday, February 7, 2015 and the Hawaiʻi State MATHCOUNTS competition on Saturday, March 7, 2015. Both events will be held at the Kamehameha Schools’ Kapalama Campus. MATHCOUNTS is a national program that engages middle school students in fun, challenging math programs as a way to expand their academic and professional opportunities.
- Honolulu Community Action Program for the “Ha Initiative: Creative STEM Afterschool Program,” which provides math and science tutoring for students in grades 2-8 that live within public housing or low-income communities on Oʻahu.
- McKinley High School Robotics program, 2015 season.
In 2014, Hawaiian Electric contributed more than $180,000 to advance STEM education and learning on Oʻahu. The company has supported STEM programs and initiatives in Hawaiʻi for more than 30 years and contributed more than $1 million during that time.
