This year’s “BikeUHM,” the annual appreciation and promotional event for those who cycle and who are thinking of cycling to UH Mānoa, coincides with the University’s Earth Day Festival on Thursday, April 24. “BikeUHM 2014: Earth Cycles” will be held along Legacy Path (near Dole Street) from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m.
Featuring more booths and interactivity than ever, “BikeUHM 2014” features:
- A bike and Rainbow Shuttle ride from Kaimuki led by UH Mānoa Chancellor Tom Apple, escorted by the “Red Hot Ladies” of the Hawaii Bicycling League.
- Test drives of ebikes from Ebikes Hawaii.
- Lessons for novice cyclists on recumbent tricycles from Hawaii Bicycling League.
- A refurbished bike sale for UHM students from the student organization Cycle Manoa (all bikes under $100).
- Informational booths from Bikeshare Hawaii, Department of Transportation Services (City & County of Honolulu), Oahu Metropolitan Planning Organization (OMPO), Queen’s Medical Center’s Trauma Center, Sportech USA, Kalihi Valley Instructional Bike Exchange (KVIBE), the Health Promotion Program of University Health Services Mānoa, UHM Financial Literacy Program, Commuter Services, and Campus Security & Emergency Management.
- Music, refreshments, giveaways, and prizes, including free bike helmets and bike locks.
- In a Transportation Demand Management Survey conducted by the University’s Commuter Services in 2013, of those who do not currently commute to campus on a bicycle, 17% of Mānoa faculty and staff and 26% of students stated that they would consider switching to a bike. An earlier survey showed that 43% of Mānoa affiliates live within three miles of campus and roughly 20% of those within one mile, a distance that would lend itself to commuting in ways other than driving a car.
To further enhance the cycling experience at UH Mānoa, the University has implemented Sharrow lanes (shared by both motorists and bicyclists) and free bike parking in any of the more than 150 racks positioned around campus. Coming soon is the installation of a secure, enclosed bike shelter in the Lower Campus Parking Structure and bike-share stations on campus, as recommended in a recent feasibility study for bike-sharing in Honolulu.
